This post was written in December 2015 and never got published. However I think it references a point in time (pre-trump) and provides a good base in which to “deconstruct the mainstream media” (thanks noagendashow.com). I will create a series of posts from this over the coming days/weeks and look at how the MSM has become nothing more
than desperate shills for the “damaged” globalists … (insert preferred group here). They are not likely going to go down without a fight and have INCREDIBLE resources available to them, but knowledge and awareness is an important starting point in which to reframe your own thinking. I have no journalist or news background and so this is the view of just your average Joe/Joanne. I ask you is this a Rant or an Insight.
Without further ado… the post.
Mainstream media stopped supplying news some time ago and now provide what can only be past off as sponsored infotainment.
Since the GFC crisis in 2008 and arguably as early as 2001 before the tech wreck, newsrooms, journalism and reporting, anecdotally came under significant pressure to improve market share, revenue or some other metric with fewer and fewer resources.
The internet introduced the concept of “citizen journalism” and later expanded the immediacy of “news” through crowd sourced stories using social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook.
TV production changed dramatically in a number of ways.
From a news perspective the introduction of the 24 hour news cycle gave the opportunity to deep dive stories, however had the challenge of keeping the viewer interested while not wanting to isolate “new viewers” coming into the middle of a bracket or story. This was ostensibly solved by introducing repeat brackets of stories for 4 or 6 hour cycles with “live updates” giving the illusion of fresh content.
Competition and the need to be first to market with the story became an issue with one of the first casualties being fact checking and solid verification. The “old way” as portrayed on HBO show Newsroom, continually holds stories until two independent sources can be found, sometimes the cost is “being right” sometimes it’s “being late”.
Depending on where you are positioned in the company biases what is important, the integrity of the newsroom demands being right, whereas the sales, finance and shareholders tend to push for ratings and therefore to be first not necessarily verifiably right.
The chase for ratings came at the expense of quality news and the subsequent introduction of “opinion pieces”, where facts are ostensibly irrelevant. Nowhere are the lines more blurred in the public’s eyes than with the Fox News Network. With an extraordinarily high market share of viewers (which is important when you need messages to be pushed to the masses or advertising to be sold to sponsors), the schedule flicks between “News” and opinion from leading “pundits” such as Hannity, O’Reilly and in the past Beck. This in itself is not a problem IF it is clear that the information being provided is entertainment only, as opinion has no real place in true news. Unfortunately this is not the case and the pundits are rolled out as oracles of truth and seers of the future.
Advertising revenue became increasingly important as alternate funding models were not apparent or considered. Segments and even shows became sponsored by corporations which, by definition, corrupts the news and reporting model, as shareholders and directors are suddenly conflicted between truth and revenue and are generally reluctant to bite the hand that feeds them.
You know that there is an issue when you get an episode of South Park made about you, but when you have a WHOLE season dedicated to you then there is clearly an issue. This was where the whole concept of Sponsored Content took hold and the news became nothing more than a series of infomercials tied together with some fear footage.
Over the coming posts I will look at the following:
- Cowtowing to sponsors
- Who are the sponsors
- What is the messaging
- Why is the messaging like this
- What has happened to news reporting
- What is the Smith Mundt Act
- Why was it repealed
Let me know what you think of the way the MSM is managing the current news cycles, whether you are in the US, Europe, Asia or elsewhere, we are sure that the reporting and portrayal will be biased in some way.
